Cameron Parish builds coastal defense barriers – KPLC 7 News

CAMERON, La. (KPLC) – Waves crashing along the Cameron Parish shoreline are a familiar sight, but one that’s been eating away at the beach for years. Now, a new protection project aims to stop that erosion before it reaches homes and roads.

The $10.8 million project, known as ME 38, involves the construction of 32 cemented breakwaters spanning Little Florida, Rutherford, and Long Beach. Crews are already installing the first barrier, with completion expected early next year.

Kara Bonsall, Director of Coastal Affairs for the Cameron Parish Police Jury, said what would happen if the project didn’t take place.

“So, a future without action of these rock breakwaters, we would see a tremendous loss of land, not only land but people that reside on this land, marshes, and infrastructure of our highways,” Bonsall said.

Bonsall also shared that this isn’t their first project; they have been doing this since 2007.
